In Light Break, Nicolai Howalt investigates the visible and invisible areas of the light spectrum as well as the life-giving and destructive power of the sun. Light Break builds upon Nobel Prize laureate Niels Ryberg Finsens work with phototherapy in the 19th century, in which certain disorders were treated by exposing the skin to particular wavelengths in sunlight. Using Finsens original filters and devices, Howalt was able to absorb specific areas of the light spectrum while letting the remaining areas of sunlight pass directly onto photosensitive paper, resulting in raw visual depictions of the sun and light itself.
