Greek & Celtic traditions cherished it for its close association with water, the moon and the Goddess Hecate. The Willow Tree was believed to enhance psychic abilities and to offer deep insights, while its strength and flexibility were seen as a metaphor for the path of the spiritual.

In Roman mythology, it was the Golden Bough, a tree branch with golden leaves, that enabled the Trojan hero, Aeneas to travel through the underworld safely.
